From things you should not do, to articles you should not post: Here’s a list of what to avoid on Hosco if you want to land your dream job in hospitality soon.

1. Commenting Under Company Posts Asking for a Job

We know that job opportunities in the hospitality industry are slowly opening up and that a job search is often harder than it seems. Still, we don’t suggest commenting under a company post to ask for a job outright. Although this action may seem harmless, it could make you seem unprofessional. When you comment under a company’s post, do it for adding value or asking a worthwhile question regarding their update. Applying for a hotel or restaurant job should be done through the job listings on the “Jobs” tab.

2. Posting Personal Information Publicly on Hosco

Unless you are looking for scammers or identity thieves, we highly suggest keeping your contact details private. Always abstain from sharing your email address, telephone number and postal address publicly. If a company needs to contact you for a job you applied to, they will do so through Hosco and your profile’s contact details. Other Hosco members can connect with you through the “Members” tab, so you can play it safe.

3. Messaging Other Members or Hospitality Employers as if You Are Buddies With Them

Yes, our platform’s messaging function is a fabulous way to connect with others and reach out to employers as a job seeker. Just because they accept your request, however, does not mean they are your buddies. In order to ensure professionalism, reach out to others with a formal greeting and stick to the subject. It’s not okay to ask for their private email address or phone number. Instead: Introduce yourself and write that you are pleased to learn more about their work or position. Signing off with a “thank you” is always better than “hugs.”

4. Sharing Posts Without Screening Them for Grammatical Errors and Professionalism First

Did you know that you can share articles with your connections on Hosco? That being said, always cross-check your posts for typos and grammatical mistakes. These errors can make you come across as messy and disorganised. Also, posts that are geared at complaining about (past) employers are a big no-no. They can be perceived as highly unprofessional, which can impact your reputation and job search negatively. Employers don’t appreciate people who bring others down.

5. Sharing Articles That Are Unrelated to Hospitality

If you want to be sharing the latest updates for the hospitality industry, that’s great. Sharing news or topics that are unrelated to the industry, its growth, its employees, or its developments won't reflect your knowledge and passion for the industry. Ask yourself these three questions before sharing any articles on Hosco:

• Does this article illustrate my interest in a particular hospitality company?
• Does this article illustrate my professionalism when it comes to the topic?
• Does this article benefit my connections in any way?

6. Leaving Your Profile Incomplete

Want to get found, get hired and make connections on Hosco? Then be sure to complete your profile and update it at all times. Putting together a good profile on Hosco is crucial if you want hospitality employers to notice you. It also increases your chances of being contacted by recruiters and found by search engines. It also enables our system to send you jobs that match your job title, work experience, and preferences.  

A complete profile also benefits your networking efforts: Members are more inclined to get in touch with someone thorough. We recommend that you always fill in the “about me” section, followed by your experience, education and skills. The best part?
