Why International Experience is Key to Your Hospitality Career

Thinking of broadening your horizons by working abroad in hospitality? International experience offers invaluable skills and knowledge, helping you grow both professionally and personally. We sat down with Miriam Galea, Internships Manager at Malta's Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS), to discuss why gaining international experience is essential for success in hospitality and how students can best navigate the challenges and opportunities that come with it.

  • How does working in different countries help hospitality professionals develop cultural competence and sensitivity, and why is this important?

Developing cultural competence is vital in today’s globalized world. When working abroad, you’ll encounter different practices, values, and norms. Experiencing this diversity firsthand allows you to better understand and respect cultural differences, which is essential when interacting with international guests and colleagues.

At ITS Malta, we see this happening when our students go abroad and work alongside people from various backgrounds, gaining valuable insights into how different cultures operate. It’s a key aspect of becoming a well-rounded hospitality professional, and the ability to work effectively in diverse environments is a significant asset for career growth.

  • What specific skills do you believe are developed or enhanced through international experience that might not be as easily acquired domestically?

International experience helps develop practical skills in a way that classroom learning or domestic work placements cannot fully replicate. While students learn the theory in class, working abroad puts those lessons into action in real-world situations, often with unique challenges and innovative practices.

For example, students develop adaptability, independence, and problem-solving skills by navigating different work environments. Maturity also deepens, as they are often working away from their home support systems. Additionally, students gain exposure to cutting-edge industry practices, tools, and technologies that may not yet be widespread in their home country.

  • How can an international experience help students build a global professional network, and why is this network important for a career in hospitality?

Networking is essential in hospitality, and international experience helps students expand their professional networks globally. During placements abroad, students meet people from various backgrounds, forming connections that can lead to future opportunities. These international ties are valuable, opening doors to job offers, collaborations, and insights into different markets and trends.

By being involved in global events and industry competitions, students can also showcase their skills and creativity, expanding their professional networks far beyond their immediate workplaces. This broad network is a long-term career asset that continues to provide opportunities and insights as they progress in their careers.

  • What challenges do hospitality professionals typically face when working abroad, and how can they overcome these challenges to succeed in their roles?

One of the most common challenges is culture shock. For students from small countries like Malta, moving to larger cities or different climates can feel overwhelming at first. The change in work environment, long distances from home, and living independently in a new culture are all significant adjustments.

However, with the right preparation and support, these challenges can be overcome. At ITS Malta, we offer counseling and well-being services to help students navigate the transition and build resilience. With time, students often find that the initial difficulties become some of the most rewarding parts of their experience.

  • As of today, what regions or countries offer the most promising opportunities for growth and innovation in the hospitality industry?

Regions like Southeast Asia, the Middle East, India, and Latin America are thriving with opportunities. These areas are rapidly growing in terms of tourism and hospitality innovation, offering students a wealth of experiences to learn from. Working in these regions provides insights into how the industry is evolving globally, especially in terms of sustainability, technology integration, and guest experience.

  • How does international experience influence leadership skills in hospitality, and what unique qualities do leaders with global experience tend to have?

International experience helps develop essential leadership qualities such as flexibility, cultural intelligence, and inclusivity. Leaders with global experience are more adept at making informed decisions that consider diverse perspectives. They are better at navigating cross-cultural teams, which is crucial in an industry that relies on collaboration between people from all over the world.

By facing challenges in new environments, students learn to think on their feet and embrace diverse ideas. These experiences build strong leaders who understand that hospitality is about making all guests feel welcome, no matter where they are from.

  • What advice would you give to students to make the most out of their international experience in terms of preparation, participation, reflection, and expectations?

Preparation is key. Research the country and the company you’ll be working with to make sure the environment and role align with your career goals. At ITS Malta, we provide students with comprehensive pre-departure talks to ensure they are mentally and practically ready for the journey ahead.

While abroad, embrace the experience fully. Take the time to participate in cultural events, engage with colleagues from different backgrounds, and reflect on your growth. Most importantly, manage your expectations—every experience comes with challenges, but those challenges are what shape you into a well-rounded professional.
