Types of Hotels: What’s the Difference? (by style)

by | CAREER GUIDANCE, Hospitality Trends

When looking for a job in the hospitality industry, it can be hard to distinguish between the different types of hotels. We’ve previously looked at the types of hotels by star rating, now we are going to look at some of the different styles of hotels you may encounter on your job hunt.

What are some common types of hotels?

Business hotels

Business hotels make up a large share of the international hotel market. This type of hotel caters to working professionals who travel often and need accommodation they can rely on. Because of their focus on business travelers, these types of hotel may not offer extra perks such as a spa or cocktail lounge. You can typically find these establishments in either the downtown or business district of an urban area.

Resort

If you want to work in a popular tourist destination but don’t want to live in a city, a resort might be the right place for you. Resorts are often found in tropical or waterfront locations where relaxation and leisure are the top priority. These types of hotels are unique in the industry because many of them offer an all-inclusive experience. This means that when a guest stays at the resort, they will be provided with food, drinks, and a wide range of services and activities to enjoy.

Residential hotels

A residential hotel is one that specializes in offering longer term temporary accommodation. These establishments cater to people who are in a city for a lengthy stay and need a space that feels more like home. Guests normally stay for at least a month and must sign a lease contract before moving in. Due to their nature, residential hotels normally offer very few amenities and services.

Inns

If you want to work in a less corporate hospitality environment, a job at an inn may be a good fit for you. Inns are usually a much more modest operation than your typical big name chain hotel. They are often family owned and operated so working there can feel much different than a large corporation. People are attracted to these locations for their quirkiness and they are normally located off the beaten path.

Suite hotels

This style of hotel is relatively new in the industry and is becoming more popular than ever. The difference between this type of hotel and a standard one is that every room is suite style. This means that all of the rooms in the hotel have luxury amenities such as a living room, kitchen area, and separate bedroom. It’s perfect for the traveling professional who may need to host guests for a meeting in their room.

Boutique hotels

Boutique hotels are locations that are bursting with personality and cater to travelers who want a unique accommodation. You can find them in hip districts of bustling urban areas, often surrounded by cool restaurants and bars. These types of hotels are normally much smaller than a standard hotel and usually have less than 100 rooms. Some boutique hotels may be individually owned and operated but many are owned by large hotel groups who want a diverse portfolio.

Bed and breakfasts

Bed and breakfasts are a type of hotel that is similar to an inn but even small or more niche. They are modest, privately-owned operations that are typically run by a family or a husband and wife. This style of accommodation is popular for people who want to escape the trappings of the city for a more home-y experience. Bed and breakfasts are typically found in picturesque rural areas that don’t have many traditional hotel options.

Motels

It may cause confusion but the term motel is a combination of the words hotel and motor. This type of hotel came into existence with the proliferation of the automobile in the early 20th century. Motels are often found along highways or interstates and cater to people on long road trips. They are not meant to be much more than a place to get some sleep and therefore offer few, if any, amenities.

With so many different types of hotels out there, there is certainly one that would be a good match for your profile. To find your dream job in the accommodation sector, check out the open hotel positions available on Hosco today!
