Strong customer service skills are important to succeed in hospitality, especially in the spa sector. Guests come to a spa for a relaxing experience and that should start the minute they walk through the door. 

As a spa attendant you always need to have a positive and calm attitude. This will help put your guests at ease as soon as they arrive at your establishment. You should give a warm greeting, answer any questions they may have, and walk them through everything they need to know to fully enjoy their time at the spa.  

If you provide an excellent guest experience, your clients will be more likely to return, recommend the spa to friends and family, and leave a big tip before they depart. 

Repeat business is important for spas and many customers now expect a more bespoke experience. When they visit a spa, especially as a returning guest, they want to be spoiled and pampered as if they were the only client in the building.  

To fulfill these expectations, you must understand each of your guests and do whatever you can to meet their needs. This could include offering them customized treatments or exclusive products among other personal touches. For some guests, it may be enough to remember their name and preferences. Having an extra towel ready for a client who always asks for one is an easy but effective way to make them special.

Empathize with your guests

Having empathy for your guests will allow you to put yourself in their shoes. Spas are meant to be a relaxing environment but some customers may feel a little nervous, especially for their first time. Some people may be less comfortable with exposing their bodies or physical contact with strangers. It’s important to listen closely for indications that someone may be uncertain about some of the treatments.

Don’t assume that every guest has the same level of comfort with a spa experience. They may have been given a spa day as a gift or are tagging along with someone else who convinced them to come. It’s important for you to be open and inclusive of all customer profiles

If a guest does express these types of feelings, talk to them about it and see how you can alleviate their worries. You could walk them through the spa treatment experience and address any doubts they may have. Being empathetic helps you understand how your guests are thinking and feeling so you can put their mind at ease.

Be flexible 

Being flexible means having the capacity to change course when necessary. As a spa attendant, you might have to carry out tasks that are not typically your job description. You could even be asked to cover for a massage therapist if they are ill and unable to work.  

A flexible spa attendant is able to respond to these changes and take on the responsibilities of other workers when necessary. You should be well informed about everything that happens in your spa. It’s important to understand what your colleagues' job duties are so you can be ready to help if your boss asks you to.
