Spa Attendant: How to Become One

by | CAREER GUIDANCE, Career Paths

Spas are the closest thing to an oasis you will find in the hospitality industry. While the guests are relaxing and disconnecting from the world, the spa attendant must be engaged and on top of things at all times.

If you are looking to work in a calm environment, then finding a spa attendant job might be the right choice for you.

What is a spa attendant?

Spa attendants are entry level employees in the spa and wellness industry. It’s your job to provide clients an extraordinary experience in a calm setting so they can relax, unwind, and enjoy the different services their spa offers to guests.

The typical work environment for a spa attendant is one that requires constant multitasking. You will be the face of the spa and the one who makes the first impression with guests.

You might be in charge of welcoming visitors, presenting the different services and treatments on offer, and showing guests to their treatment rooms, among other tasks.

What does a spa attendant do?

The basic spa attendant job description includes a wide variety of tasks to help ensure the business runs as smoothly as possible.

One of the main tasks for a spa attendant is cleaning. This includes keeping the front reception area tidy and clutter-free  and cleaning the spa rooms after each guest. Guests will come and go throughout the entire day so you will need to be vigilant about keeping the common spaces clean and presentable at all times. Spa clients expect a spotless and inviting environment so this is a crucial function for this role.

Another important task of a spa attendant is welcoming and engaging with guests before and after their treatments. This should include a warm greeting and salutation, at the very least. A key part of this process is checking in guests using the spa’s software. A spa can use this software to track client behavior, like how long they stay or which services they buy, and then utilize that information to improve marketing.

In high-end spa environments that offer a more VIP experience, you may have to fulfill special requests or the needs of a specific client.

Spa attendants are also in charge of making sure the spa premises are secure and keeping track of any maintenance issues. You should always be checking and rechecking doors to make sure that only registered guests or clients are able to enter.

You should have a daily checklist for both your maintenance and cleaning tasks. Maintaining the space also includes checking the spa equipment to make sure they are functioning as they should. If something needs to be repaired, it’s your job to report it to your supervisor.

Spa attendants are also responsible for selling products and services as well as ensuring guest satisfaction. This part of the job includes answering questions, responding to requests, and assisting customers in becoming acquainted with the spa.

When a guest first arrives, you will introduce them to the available services, show them around the facilities, and try to sell a treatment package. Some spas even offer commision for any extra services you sell which can be a nice boost in your bank account on pay day.

What is the career path of a spa attendant?

There are many jobs that make up a spa, however most of them are specialized roles like massage therapists or estheticians. But, there is a career path for spa attendants who want to move up the ladder. If you can show that you are a spa guru and have some solid experience on your CV, you will put yourself in position to become a spa/wellness area manager.

What education/experience do you need?

It depends on the environment you work in, but most spas will expect you to at least have a high school diploma to get the role. If you have a bachelor's degree, that’s an added bonus and could help you out when it’s time for a promotion.

No formal experience is necessary for the job but a background in customer service will certainly help you land the job..
