5 Things You Should Do Before Applying for a Job

by | CAREER GUIDANCE, Job Hunting

Scientific studies prove that we’re living faster than ever. We walk, text, and even apply for jobs at a much quicker pace than before! We’re not scientists, so we won’t comment on how we should walk and text. However, our expert recruitment knowledge tells us that mindlessly applying for jobs isn’t a recipe for success, you need to think strategically about what you should do before applying for a job.

We've created the following five tactics to help you determine which is the right opportunity for you; therefore, allowing you to apply for the right jobs, more efficiently!

1. Don't Apply for Every Job in Sight

It’s better to put your energy into applying for jobs that are right for you than spreading yourself too thin when it comes to applications. That’s why Hosco exists. 2. Pay Close Attention to Job Descriptions

You should be able to identify the skills and competencies needed to succeed, the day-to-day responsibilities, and how the job fits in the hierarchy (is it entry-level or mid-career). If any of this information is missing, you can’t make an informed decision about whether to apply. If the job sounds enticing, but is missing key information, reach out to the hiring manager and request these specific details.

3. Outline What You Have to Offer

As soon as you have all of the basic information, it’s time to start thinking from the employer’s perspective. What can you offer them? Look at the requirements of the job and make a list of the ones you have. Remember: it’s okay if you don’t have them all. Now, write specific examples of how you’ve implemented them in your previous positions. Not only will this allow you to assess your specific value in relation to each job, it’ll help you make informed decisions, and prepare you for interviews.

4. Evaluate What You'll Gain

The first thing that’ll pop into your head is the salary, right? Of course, this is fundamental, but one thing you must do before applying for a job is think if this new job will prepare you for the future you desire. If your dream is to head up the Food & Beverage department one day, decide if the knowledge and practical learning opportunities will help you achieve your goal. If the answer isn’t clear, perhaps it’s not the right job for you.

Don’t forget to analyze the benefits the company has to offer like paid time off, free meals, health insurance, pension plans, travel assistance, and more. These initiatives all add up to financially increase your overall salary.

5. Decide If This Is THE Opportunity for You

Realistically there are pros and cons to all jobs. It may be a perfect fit professionally, but involve a relocation to a city you don’t love. Or, it may offer an amazing opportunity to do what you love, but for a lower salary. Almost all great opportunities involve compromises, so you need to decide what you’re happy with.
