Hospitality jobs near me or job title location: what search term?

by | CAREER GUIDANCE, Job Hunting

It’s hard to know how people functioned before the Internet and smartphones came into the picture. If we need something nowadays, chances are we can have it dropped off right at our doorstep, thanks to online marketplaces and speedy delivery.

Planning a vacation is also a cinch, as it’s possible to book flights, lodging and entertainment from the comfort of our couches. If we don’t know what ails us or why our child’s behaving a certain way, we can ask the Interweb. What do we do, though, when we’re looking for a new hospitality job? Is this topic an exception in terms of benefiting from the convenience and accessibility of the beloved Internet?

Is it as easy as typing “hospitality jobs near me” into a search engine? Actually, it can be.

Search engines are your friend

When it comes to finding a new hospitality job, search engines are an excellent resource – one that might often be overlooked in favour of popular job boards or networking websites like LinkedIn or Indeed (which are also very valuable, by the way, and we’ll touch on those soon.)

It’s important, however, to choose the right search terms when using the usual suspects like Google, Bing or Yahoo. With geolocation and the fact that they have honed algorithms and a broad sweep, search engines can definitely be your ally, and offer you options you may not have thought to investigate.

It’s important to note that, though excellent for protecting your privacy, search engines such as DuckDuckGo or Qwant may not give you personalised results based on your location. Their goal in existing is to retain as little information about you as possible.

As to the others, results might include several job boards that are less well-known and more specific, or you might be presented with companies’ own websites, government websites and so on. Regardless, you’ll be able to scour possibilities that you might have overlooked had you not turned to the all-knowing Internet and its sifting search engines.

So, what are the best terms to search for to get ideal results?

Jobs in hospitality

The first, as alluded to at the beginning of this article, would be to search: “[job title] + jobs near me”. So, for example, if you’re looking to snag a job as a waiter, you could type: “waiter jobs near me”; if you want to be a chef, you’d search: “chef jobs near me”. If you’re not sure but you know you’re looking for something in hospitality: “hospitality jobs near me”.

The second option is to search “[job title] + [location]”. So, in the same vein, if you want to find a job at a restaurant in London because you’re planning to move there, you could search, “waiter jobs London”. If you want to move to Manchester or Leeds, or you live there already, “waiter jobs Manchester” or “waiter jobs Leeds” would be a good place to start.

It’s a good idea to try both search options: “[job title] + jobs near me” and “[job title] + [location]”. You’ll get different results, and you can decide which ones are more relevant to your search. The more choices and information you have, the better.

Hospitality networks

Of course, if you’re looking for hospitality jobs, we can’t not plug our own network, Hosco

The benefit of platforms such as ours, or even others like LinkedIn or Indeed, is that you can build a network, contact leaders and employees in the industry directly, pick up tips and advice and, in Hosco’s case, even take courses based on your interests, education level and skill set.

The platforms are organised to make searching by topic and location easier, and you can toggle options like contract types, date or company sectors.

Job networks and boards also allow you to post your resume, skills, interests and articles to your profile – so even if you’re not actively looking, a head-hunter needing your experience and abilities can get in contact with you. You might end up with your dream hospitality job without even trying.

Search engines or job boards?

The difference is, if you want to cast a wide net, and you’re interested in considering options from a range of varied listings, search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing are a good option – using search terms like “hospitality jobs near me” or “hospitality jobs London”.

If you’re looking for a tried and true, clear and organised list of job openings that will give you already tailored options, which you can hone further depending on your needs, Hosco, LinkedIn or Indeed might be the way to go.

Ideally, you’ll want to take advantage of all of the methods at your disposal, and in our opinion, you don’t have to choose one at the expense of another. Why not both?

Regardless, we hope you find the hospitality job you’re looking for!
